U.S. SUPREME COURT: AMICUS BRIEFS FILED IN LANDMARK CASE



On July 19, 2004, amicus briefs in support of ending the execution of juvenile offenders were filed in Roper v. Simmons (No. 03-0633) that will decide whether the execution of juvenile defendants is a violation of the Eighth Ammendment. In addition to the defendant’s brief, amicus briefs were submitted by such notables as President Jimmy Carter, the American Medical Association, the European Union, and the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The American Bar Association’s Juvenile Justice Center has compiled copies of the briefs that can be viewed on their Web site .

DEATH PENALTY DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON NBC’S DATELINE ON JULY 30, 2004



The Documentary DEADLINE, which follows the actions of Illinois Governor George Ryan in emptying the state’s death row in January 2003, will be shown during a special 2-hour Dateline on NBC-TV, July 30, 2004 at 8 PM. A feature presentation at the 2004 Sundance film festival, the documentary has been widely praised by film critics. It was produced by Big Mouth Productions and directed by Katy Chevigny and Kirsten Johnson.
