U.S. SUPREME COURT: AMICUS BRIEFS FILED IN LANDMARK CASE



On July 19, 2004, ami­cus briefs in sup­port of end­ing the exe­cu­tion of juve­nile offend­ers were filed in Roper v. Simmons (No. 03 – 0633) that will decide whether the exe­cu­tion of juve­nile defen­dants is a vio­la­tion of the Eighth Ammendment. In addi­tion to the defen­dan­t’s brief, ami­cus briefs were sub­mit­ted by such nota­bles as President Jimmy Carter, the American Medical Association, the European Union, and the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The American Bar Association’s Juvenile Justice Center has com­piled copies of the briefs that can be viewed on  their Web site .

DEATH PENALTY DOCUMENTARY TO AIR ON NBC’S DATELINE ON JULY 30, 2004



The Documentary DEADLINE, which fol­lows the actions of Illinois Governor George Ryan in emp­ty­ing the state’s death row in January 2003, will be shown dur­ing a spe­cial 2‑hour Dateline on NBC-TV, July 30, 2004 at 8 PM. A fea­ture pre­sen­ta­tion at the 2004 Sundance film fes­ti­val, the doc­u­men­tary has been wide­ly praised by film crit­ics. It was pro­duced by Big Mouth Productions and direct­ed by Katy Chevigny and Kirsten Johnson.
