Alabama Executes Alan Miller, 1600^th Person Executed in Modern Era of the Death Penalty

On September 26, 2024, Alabama exe­cut­ed Alan Miller, mak­ing him the 1600^th per­son exe­cut­ed since 1976.

Alan Miller was exe­cut­ed by nitro­gen hypox­ia after sur­viv­ing a botched lethal injec­tion on September 22, 2022. He was the sec­ond per­son ever exe­cut­ed by that method; the oth­er, Kenneth Smith, was also exe­cut­ed in Alabama after sur­viv­ing a botched lethal injection.

Mr. Miller was the fourth per­son exe­cut­ed in three days in the U.S., despite pub­lic opin­ion polls show­ing grow­ing con­cerns about the fair­ness and accu­ra­cy of the death penal­ty and declin­ing sup­port for its use. The peo­ple exe­cut­ed this week were Marcellus Williams in Missouri, Travis Mullis in Texas, Emmanuel Littlejohn in Oklahoma, and Alan Miller in Alabama.
