2015 Death Sentences by Name, Race, and County
There were 49 new death sentences in 2015. At the time, that that was the fewest number of new death sentences in any year since 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court declared all existing death-penalty statutes unconstitutional in Furman v. Georgia.
New death sentences in 2015 declined 33% from the already 40-year low of 73 new death sentences in 2014. Of the 32 states with the death penalty, only 14 imposed a death sentence in 2015.
