2013 Death Sentences by Name, Race, and County

There were 79 new death sentences in 2013, one* more than in 2012, but still the second fewest since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the death penalty in 1976. Of the the 32 states with the death penalty, only 15 imposed a death sentence in 2013. (We had originally reported 80 new death sentences, but further research revealed that Khalid Pasha’s sentence in Hillsborough Co., Florida, was a resentencing.)

* NOTE: This page was updated on July 11, 2019 to reflect the fact that Raymond Oscar Butler was sentenced to death in California in 2012. We had previously erroneously classified it as a resentence.
