2012 Death Sentences by Name, Race, and County

78* new death sentences were imposed across the United States in 2012, marking what was then the second fewest death sentences imposed in any year since the Supreme Court overturned all of the country’s death-penalty statutes in Furman v. Georgia in 1972. It was the second consecutive year in which new death sentences fell below 100, following 37 consecutive years of 114 or more.

* NOTE: This page was updated on December 10, 2013 to reflect that Bryan Hall in Nevada was formally sentenced to death in 2013, not 2012. It was updated again on July 11, 2019 to reflect that a death sentence imposed on Raymond Oscar Butler in California in 2012 that we initially classified as a capital resentencing was actually a new death sentence.
