The Largest Mass Execution in US History

On December 26, 1862, following the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, the federal government hanged 38 members of the Dakota tribe in Minnesota. It was the largest mass execution in United States history. Two days after the Dakota surrendered at Camp Release on September 26, 1862, a military commission began trying Dakota men accused of participating in the war. Philippine President Commutes Over 100 Death Sentences On December 10, 2000, Philippine President Joseph Estrada commuted the death sentences for 105 convicts to life imprisonment. The move came after Estrada was urged by Bishop emeritus Antonio Fortich to release all political prisoners before Christmas. The Georgia Supreme Court granted a stay in the case of Alexander Williams. Georgia, which has not had an execution in over 2 years, was scheduled to execute Alexander Williams in the state’s electric chair on August 24, 2000. Williams was only 17 years old at the time of the crime, and is a diagnosed schizophrenic.
